Illuminant / Ljosgjafi

The lamp ILLUMINANT is based on the idea that “what goes around comes around”.

Illuminant is my final assignment as a Product designer from Iceland Academy of the Arts, spring 2008. The idea of the lamp came to me in a course where we were supposed to make romantic lights.
When making experiments with the reflective material I thought a lot of the existence of people getting reflection of their own behavior. I belive that its true; you reap as you sow.

The lampshade is made of reflective material and hangs from the ceiling on a fishline. The threads hanging from the shade are made from the same reflective material. A led bulb is placed in a cylinder on the floor and 4 colored glass plates are included (red, violet, blue and brown).

You choose the coloured glass you prefer and place it on top of the cylinder and the lampshade reflects your choice.

Illuminant makes a magical atmosphere when turned on, like in a fairy tale.
The ceiling is decorated by the lamp with great refraction.

Skyr confection / Skyrkonfekt

In collaboration with 2 fellow students, Alda Halldorsdottir and Sabrina Stigler.
The assignment were to meet farmers that are going to sell products direct from their farms. Our farmer had dairy farm and wanted us to find som new way to use the milk product.
We filled up these chocolate udder with an special Icelandic milk product called Skyr. Skyr is almost fatfree sour product, mostly eaten as breakfast or a a well balanced diet at lunchtime.
They taste great !
The package is printed on the inside with picture of an old porcelain plate.

Bookshelf / Bokahilla

After studying designers work, in my case Ron Arad, we were supposed to design something in theyr spirit.
I had a strong good memory of how I felt when his shelf Bookworm came on the market. I loved and still loves to see books in this unusual way on his shelf.
I decided to make a shelves out of old pocket books and to try to give people similar feelings. No mounting can be seen when they are on the wall.

Spoon / Skeid

The Icelandic Akademy Of The Arts, has had for few years a course in collaboration with our National Museum. Our assignment there, is to look into our cultural heritage and make out of that research, a product for the Museums souvenir shop.
In Iceland, Clamshells have been found in graves and burial mounds that date back to the settlement period and it is belived that they were used as spoons.
I provided new Clamshells and got them printed both with the text:
dishwasher safe and environmentally friendly.
They are now for sale in the Museums souvenir shop and comes in little white paperbag with the historical and theoretical informations printed on.

Brake disk / Bremsudiskur

New decorative china with the pattern of a motorcycle brake disk.
The meaning of this pattern is to get us to reduce the portion of our meals. Its a regular size of plate but the part you can put your meal on is only the size of a small cake plate.
You will also have to stop using all the gravy because it would just leak out from the plate and damage your tablecloth!
